The canalside promenade between Granary Square and York Way
Wharf Road Gardens is the new green route which makes it easier to get between Granary Square and York Way.
Paths wind through lawns and raised beds that are edged with benches. This is a great spot to pause and watch the narrowboats and birdlife on the Regent’s Canal.
Places to eat and drink
At the Granary Square end of the gardens, is the Lighterman – an all-day pub and dining venue. The Waitrose café is also here, with plenty of outdoor seating – perfect for a coffee or a quick bite. And to top it off, the Ruby Violet ice cream shop.
Making Granary Square more accessible
There is new, gently-sloping ramp access from Wharf Road Gardens to the canal towpath and a public lift for those who can’t manage the ramp or the steps at Granary Square.
A design influenced by the railways
Wharf Road Gardens is designed by Townshend Landscape Architects (TLA) with support from Dan Pearson Studio. These practices also designed the adjoining Handyside Gardens.
The sinuous shapes of both gardens reflect the winding route of the canal and the pattern of the railway sidings that once ran through the site. The beds are framed in corten steel, which was used in the construction of the railways back in industrial times. Find out more about the history of King’s Cross.
