King’s Cross Academy

The primary and nursery school at King’s Cross

King’s Cross Academy is a new purpose-built primary and nursery school in the heart of King’s Cross. The school primarily serves the Camden and Islington areas.

The Academy is a happy and friendly school where children develop a love for learning within a supportive, creative and exciting environment. The school motto is ‘Love learning together’, and it embraces pupils, parents, teachers and staff.

Learning at King’s Cross Academy

The school’s vision is to prepare children for the modern world by making them highly successful life-long learners. The Academy provides children with a complete education, implementing a rigorous approach to the teaching of core skills in Mathematics and English, as part of a broad and balanced, project-based curriculum. The curriculum promotes children’s skills in listening, speaking, thinking and questioning, and develops their social and emotional skills.

Inspirational and enthusiastic teachers support and challenge children to develop their thoughtfulness, confidence and leadership in learning while increasing their knowledge and skills.

Learning from the area

The school is located in a unique environment, and the Academy team focuses on broadening children’s experiences by tapping into the many learning opportunities in the area.

The school joins up with world-class organisations in the surrounding area. That might mean exploring technology with Google; journalism with the Guardian; science at the Francis Crick Institute; or understanding nutrition at the Waitrose cookery school. Pupils are also able to learn about nature at Camley Street Natural Park and grow their own food with Global Generation at the Skip Garden.

Leadership

The Academy is led by Stephen Mitchell, previously Deputy Head Teacher at John Ball Primary School in Lewisham. Stephen is currently in the final stages of his doctorate in education exploring the impact of performing arts on pupils attainment. He is a PiXL consultant associate and the lead facilitator for the NPQLT programme of study.

King’s Cross Academy is sponsored by the King’s Cross Academy Trust, formed by the King’s Cross Central Limited Partnership (KCCLP), the owner and developer of King’s Cross, together with Michael and Clara Freeman, who have a long-standing commitment to supporting schools, educational charities and universities.

The Frank Barnes School for Deaf Children

King’s Cross Academy is co-located in The Plimsoll Building with the Frank Barnes School for Deaf Children.

The two schools share not just a building but enjoy a close partnership at all levels. The Academy teaches British Sign Language, and shared spaces give the children the chance to communicate together.

The school building and facilities

The two schools occupy the ground and first floors of the 14-storey Plimsoll Building – a new apartment building set alongside Regent’s Canal in the heart of the King’s Cross development.

The Academy provides a state-of-the-art learning environment – the space is light and airy, designed to create a wonderful and inspiring environment for children to learn and play.

The school has its own secure playground within the grounds of the building. Next to the Academy is the new Gasholder Park, and the children also have access to a multi-use games area in the adjacent Tapestry building.
