Riviera Style

Fashion Correspondent is a monthly column curated by recognised voices from within the world of style. This edition is curated by Vogue’s Executive Fashion News and Features Editor, Emma Spedding. Read on to discover her list of Med-inspired pieces to keep you stylish this summer, available from King’s Cross and Coal Drops Yard retailers.

London has suddenly gone into full-on summer mode, with temperatures cranking up a notch. If you don’t have a beach holiday on the horizon, Coal Drops Yard has its own Riviera feel this summer with sun-bathing spots along the canal, rows of fountains and plenty of spots for an iced coffee or chilled glass of rosé. To me, the word Riviera immediately conjures up a stereotypical uniform of Breton tops, basket bags and red lipstick – however there are also subtler ways to bring a Mediterranean spirit to your wardrobe. Whether you’re going to Provence or staying at Regent’s Canal this July, here are my top picks that will see you through the hot weather.

Stripes

Breton striped tops are the unofficial uniform of the French Riviera and we have Gabrielle “Coco“ Chanel to thank, as she included the nautical stripes in a collection in 1917 and they remained a mainstay of her own holiday wardrobe. At Coal Drops Yard you’ll find classic marinière tops (head to A.P.C), however we also love stripes which experiment with colourways beyond the classic navy and white pairing. This COS knitted vest is an update on this summer classic top – and it’s coming home with me.

All whites

One of the chicest, throw-on summer looks whether you’re in Kings Cross or in Provence, is to stick to an all-white look. I find that co-ords are the easiest thing to wear in hot weather, as they are a ready-made outfit, and look instantly pulled together. As for the accessories, I’d add neutral touches, such as this beautiful almond-green leather shoulder bag. Just watch out for Aperol Spritz spillages.

    The throw-on dress

I am one of those people who packs a suitcase full of dresses for any beach holiday. The key is to pick a style that you can throw on over a bikini for walks along the coastline, or can then pair with a smarter sandal and some jewellery to dress it up for sunset drinks. This & Other Stories open knit dress sold out quickly last year and was so sought after it has been released again this summer.

    Beach-ready Accessories

The archetypal image of Riviera fashion will include a sweeping oversized hat (preferably with a ribbon) and a vintage basket bag with plenty of Provençale charm and enough size for a baguette or two. For something a little less obvious, however, I’d recommend going for a minimalist baseball cap and simple gold jewellery. This towel bag will fit in all your essentials.
