When Moto Priestman arrived in London 25 years ago, the only Japanese food people knew about was sushi.
Brought up in Osaka, the ‘kitchen of Japan’, and realising that she enjoyed communicating through cooking, Moto set up a stall in Brick Lane serving Osakan okonomiyaki, frittata-like Japanese pancakes, where her delicious, simple food soon attracted a cult following.
Okan now has four locations, the newest of which is on Lower Stable Street.
Alongside Moto’s celebrated okonomiyaki, a sort of Japanese pancake, the small but perfectly formed menu boasts donburi, yaki soba, miso udon and a selection of otsumami – Japanese tapas.
