Voted ‘Most Beautiful Restaurant in the World’ in 2016.
Evening Standard

In March 2023, Alexander Theil (previously of Barrafina and Beaufort in London and Theil’s in Berlin) joined German Gymnasium as head chef with a mission to challenge preconceptions of German cuisine by bringing a refined take on it to London’s food scene.

The restaurant will offer a range of authentic German starters including Krabben Cocktail and Flädelsuppe (beef bone broth), while mains included roasted meats like Rehrüken Baden Baden (roast roe deer saddle)  and Ente aus dem Rohwith (whole roasted duck) and a variety of regional dishes. Deserts will included all time authentic classics such as Kaisercharrn and Windbeutel.

In the ground floor café, diners can tuck into Mittel-European classics like  schnitzels, smoked schinkenknacker, and schweinshaxe – from breakfast to dinner.

The first floor Meister Bar encompasses Berlin glamour and world class cocktails and serves as a stand alone destination. The new cocktail menu (launching mid-April) is inspired by Germany’s national parks includes such highlights as ‘The Black Forest’ (Monkey 47 Schwarzwald Dry Gin, Jasmin, Black Forest regional wine, peach liqueur, Supasawa and grapefruit bitters).

German Gymnasium was voted the “Most Beautiful Restaurant in the World” in 2016, and it’s not hard to see why. The entire building has been kept as one open space showcasing the Victorian period features under a grand vaulted ceiling. There is a mezzanine level reached by a striking pair of staircases where you’ll find the Meister Bar and more formal dining. The ground floor houses the Grand Café with an open kitchen, a chic bar and curved banquette seating.

The outdoor terrace has been transformed into a gin garden, with luscious greenery and covered seating.
